Pre-War Tuneup

IsettaDude – Summer 2009

Does anyone know the procedure for timing a prewar? I'll be taking apart the carb today and check the float level. I have no idea what level to place it at, so I guess I'll just fake it.

Not a PreWar person but I'll take a stab at it, there is a small set screw plug in the side of the Tillotson Carb. If you take that out and gas just seeps out the float is adjusted, if it pours out it is to high (or float has sunk) and if none comes out to low.

The float level adjustment is described in the manual, assuming carb is dismantled so you have the top with floats exposed, "Turn assembly upside down and with the float lever resting on the inlet needle carefully bend EACH lever arm if necessary, to give a distance of 1 27/64 inches from the face of the body gasket to the top of the raised seam which encircles each float."

Timing is listed as: Points .020", Spark Plugs .025". Timing is set according to the manual "turn engine till mark on the front of the flywheel is 5/8" ahead of top position. Loosen distributor clamp screw and shift distributor so the points are just ready to open."
