How does the steering wheel get pulled or does it?
How does the steering wheel get pulled or does it?
The rear wheels (brake hubs) uses the same puller as the steering--put it on tight, hit it with a hammer while pulling up on the wheel. (These are knockoff pullers not finger pullers)
The only way to remove the wheel without damaging the wheel or the hollow shaft is to find a nut and bolt the same size, and thread as the steering column. Remove the horn wire, screw the nut onto the shaft, but not down to the steering wheel, screw the bolt down till it touches the hollow shaft, and tighten it slightly. Have someone pull up on the steering wheel, and hit the bolt with a hammer. Should only take one or two hits.
What does the spring under the steering wheel do?
The spring under the steering wheel keeps pressure on the roller bearing at the top of the column. Do not forget to put it back in or the ball bearings will fall out.
My 47CC does not have the spring or the ball bearings. Was this incorporated into the later models? My 47 has a fabric/felt like bearing.
The early cars (maybe even early 48) did not use the ball bearing/spring combination. They used a metal encased felt/fabric bushing (as Speedo described). Both styles are available. PreWar is different than both.
